The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Students are selected for membership by majority vote of an anonymous five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school. Students in grade 11 are eligible for membership after the close of the second marking period and students in grade 12 are eligible for membership after the close of the fourth marking period of junior year. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 95.000. Based on the timeframe indicated, those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete an application that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary logs/records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s character and leadership. Any solicited faculty input and all completed student applications are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection.
A formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. New members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. Members are expected to attend scheduled meetings, perform a minimum of 30 hours of individual community service, participate in and/or execute group projects and fundraisers. Failure to uphold the NHS pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and member responsibilities may result in dismissal from the organization. There is a $25 membership fee to cover induction ceremony and graduation NHS materials. Students are also required to purchase an NHS t-shirt, which would cost an additional $15.
